At Thunder Lake, a yearly tradition has arisen on the Fourth of July.
The community organizes a boat regatta that passes in review in front of the
various cottages. It's an opportunity to dress up the various boat,
spend some time on the water and remember the sacrifices that have been made
to insure our rights. Check out the classic vessels that wend their
way around Thunder Lake. |

Pioneer days is a long term tradition for the town of Manistique. The
party is a week long celebration with folk singers, parades, individuals
dressing up in 1800's costumes and street fairs with local artists.
Our freelance photographer was impressed with the street fairs. It's
especially interesting to get a glimpse of the issues that are important in
the local area. Check out the message on the garbage cans. |

Traditions build upon traditions. In the closing years of the
18th century, the German tradition of having a decorated pine tree as a
symbol of Christmas began to spread through the country. The merchants
of the mid west rose to the opportunity and sailing schooners on Lake
Michigan began to supply fresh pine trees to the growing cities of the
Midwest. One of those schooners was the Rouse Simmons and the course
that she followed was from Thompson here in the UP to Chicago. Her
Captain earned the name "Captain Santa". Check out the story by
clicking on the picture to the left. If you follow the links you will
find how the tradition is celebrated even to this day. |
